Kindergarten Language Arts: The Five Big Things

1. Students must know 100% of all the uppercase and lowercase letters and their sounds.
2. Students will be able to successfully read 50 high frequency words by year end.
3. Students can respond to questions about text using the elements of a story including setting, characters, and key events.
4. Students are able to use the 5 finger rule to choose a book they are able to read and comprehend.
5. Students will read on a Level D at the end of the year.

Parents need to stay involved with their child's education and know the expectations for completing the kindergarten year. Practice any areas of weakness every night until successful. If the child is not able to do these 5 Big Things, set up a teacher/parent conference. It takes team work to teach a child.
